Without Toulouse Lautrec, we would probably have forgotten this extraordinary character of Montmartre nights, dancer, contortionist and clown: Cha-U-Kao.
Her name could suggest that she was Japanese at a time when the Land of the Rising Sun inspired painters and artists (starting with Lautrec himself). But it is nothing! Its name comes from a dance derived from the cancan, very fashionable at the Moulin Rouge: the chahut, made fashionable by La Goulue and Valentin le boné.
As for the chaos, it is about the agitation and the cries which rose from the room when the artists made their entry.

Assemblage : manuel (par simple emboitage des pièces)Sans Toulouse Lautrec, on aurait sans doute oublié ce personnage hors-normes des nuits montmartroises, à la fois danseuse, contorsionniste et clownesse : Cha-U-Kao.
Son nom pourrait faire penser qu’elle est Japonaise en un temps où le pays du Soleil levant inspirait les peintres et les artistes (à commencer par Lautrec lui-même). Mais il n’en est rien ! Son nom vient d’une danse dérivée du cancan, très en vogue au Moulin Rouge : le chahut, mis à la mode par la Goulue et Valentin le désossé.
Quant au chaos, il s’agit de l’agitation et des cris qui s’élevaient de la salle quand les artistes faisaient leur entrée.
